On auction on E-Bay at the moment is an 18th century trephination kit - trephination, as I'm sure you know, being the ancient surgical procedure where they drilled a hole in the patient's skull 'to let the badness out'. Apparently, the success rate was fairly low but that didn't stop optimistic medical men from giving it a go. In modern times the procedure is now called trepanation and, with the ease of use of modern hand-held drills the treatment is almost always self-administered, but still usually with minimal success. Not recommended - but for approximately $6000 this beautiful kit can be yours, to drill your own skull in the privacy of your own home.
