Honest Mistakes Revisited
I have felt quite nauseous all day after reading today's 'Scotland on Sunday'. The leading article and editorial suggest that in October 2000 the Deputy Chief Constable of Tayside Police reported to the Crown Office that (in relation to Shirley McKie's case) "there was criminality involved in the actings of the SCRO". If the newspaper is accurate then it is impossible to understand how 5 years later there comes an Executive statement that it was all down to 'an honest mistake'. Where on earth is the much trumpeted transparency and open government? It looks as though one has to understand the Executive statement as being "there was a misidentification due to an HONEST MISTAKE, but thereafter there was a concerted and ongoing criminal conspiracy to cover up that HONEST MISTAKE". C'mon people, sort this out immediately.
