Sign 'O' The Times

The previous post, involving as it does the changing in meaning of a sign, reminded me of the sign which greets you at Dunaverty golf course at Southend. For a hundred years, in accordance with the wishes and beliefs of the Sabbatarian Presbyterians this is approximately how it appeared - But as the heathens and barbarians stormed the gates of Rome and overthrew everything which was holy, the pressure grew and grew, controversy raged, brother fell out with brother, ministers and priests declaimed from the pulpit, atheists and unbelievers plotted in secret, all was turmoil until eventually there were sufficient Godless club members to reverse a century of devout tradition - this bitter and hard-fought revolution was signified thus
