VICTORY FOR ENGLAND : Hugh Johns' Last Tape
Some of you are old enough to remember the 1974 World Cup Final between West Germany and Holland. The match was refereed by Englishman Jack Taylor. The ITV commentator was Hugh Johns. Here is a transcript of his commentary, as edited by 'Foul' magazine:- "Referee Jack Taylor reaching into his pocket again, a scoreline of 1-1 but is this going to be the third booking? YES IT IS! Neeskens gets the yellow card, that's a goal and a booking for him and there's the incident that brought him to referee Jack Taylor's attention.....Cruyff might get a booking there if he says anything more to Jack Taylor, still angrily Jack Taylor waves the players away from him.....It looks very much as if Jack Taylor, yes, Jack Taylor has booked Cruyff, well that was sheer foolishness by Cruyff, great star that he is, he shouldn't show his temperament like that, Jack Taylor has been pretty firm in this half and obviously a great deal for Brian Moore and the panel to discuss in London...... Maier makes a meal of it, they're squaring up to Cruyff, Muller is there, Overath is there, Maier down on the ground, and referee Jack Taylor is right on it......Manager Schoen back on his bench, his eyes had brightened for a moment there but now they're dull again as indeed the weather has been all afternoon......and Cruyff had a little dig at Vogts there, some advice being offered to referee Jack Taylor by the West Germans........Goalkick, but referee Jack Taylor saw a deflection....Maier showing referee Jack Taylor that it didn't go completely over the line but I really can't see how he can get away with a con like that....and we look now as....looking back at the game in fact whether referee Jack Taylor......making sure that the ten yards is back.....(unintelligible) Haan, that's Cruyff going to get a run against Vogts but he's there, Beckenbauer nods, NEESKENS! but a foul is given anyway, a foul is given, referee Taylor looking at his watch and takes....a note of the time......Maier trying to instruct referee Jack Taylor that somebody else's name should be booked. Franz Beckenbauer, the man who always looks cool but I get the feeling you could probably fry eggs on his forehead at the moment, his brain working overtime....about two minutes to play, Holland looking for the equaliser but Germany down to ten men and Benhof's had his treatment, wants to get back on the field, referee Jack Taylor signals him on....this game about 180 seconds away from the finish...Rep against Breitner, and Breitner falls, the free kick given , and Jack Taylor shakes his fist at Johnny Rep, it's getting very scrappy out there now, Muller bundled out of it and referee Jack Taylor has.....ENDED THE GAME.....and West Germany.....the whole stadium.....the banners roaring.......(inaudible)
